The laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band procedure is a restrictive surgical procedure in which a band is placed around the upper most part of the stomach laparoscopically. This band divides the stomach into two portions, one small and one larger portion. Because food passes from the upper stomach pouch to the lower stomach pouch slowly, one will feel full longer.
The band is left empty at the time of surgery, but can be adjusted later as nutritional and weight loss needs change.
Advantages:
- No opening or removal of any part of stomach or intestines.
- No altering of natural anatomy.
- The amount of food that can be consumed is restricted.
- Food consumed passes through the digestive tract in the usual order, allowing it to be fully absorbed into the body.
- Band can be adjusted to increase of decrease restriction, based on how much weight you want to lose or as nutritional needs change throughout your life (illness, pregnancy).
Disadvantages:
- Possible to "eat through" the operation.
- Nausea and vomiting is likely if patient does not comply with diet.
