Compulsive gambling is a progressive illness that is diagnosable and treatable. It can be as debilitating as alcoholism or drug addiction, and is just as prevalent.
The Minnesota Center for Addiction Studies estimates that 1.5 percent of all adults are pathologic or compulsive gamblers - and 7 percent are problem gamblers.
Often misdiagnosed, compulsive gamblers experience extreme euphoria and depression, depending on whether they are winning or losing. The suicide rate is four times higher in gamblers than non-gamblers.
Fairview Chemical Dependency Services’ Compulsive Gambling Program is designed to treat individuals diagnosed with a compulsive gambling disorder. It is part of our renowned chemical dependency program, which has successfully treated chemically dependent patients and their families for 30 years.
We begin with in-depth gambling assessments conducted by state certified counselors who specialize in evaluation and treatment of compulsive gambling. The assessment helps clients identify the extent of their gambling issues and recommends appropriate therapeutic options.
Our compulsive gambling program is a dedicated program that meets four evenings per week for six weeks. It is based on the 12-step program originally developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Participants meet with counselors one-to-one, talk with other gamblers in group therapy, attend lectures and view films. The concurrent Family Program enables family members to receive helpful information, as well as counseling, during the six-week program.
Our staff members are specially trained to help compulsive gamblers and their families. They include:
- Primary counselors
- Family counselors
- Spiritual care counselors
Phase II Recovery is the key to successful treatment. After completing primary treatment for compulsive gambling, we encourage all participants to take part in our Phase II Recovery Management and Phase III Growth Group programs.
