Volunteer Opportunities

The following is a complete list of volunteer opportunities.  Please note that openings may not be available in every program.  We cannot guarantee placement in a particular program.

Cardiac Catheterization (University Campus) 

Assist staff, patients and families during interventional cardiac procedure.  Must be 21 years or older.

CHILD Day Care Center (Riverside Campus)

Work with infants and toddlers in our day care center.  (These are not sick or hospitalized children.) 

Child Family Life (University Campus)

Volunteers with CFL services work with pediatric patients and their siblings in the hospital and the various clinics. The primary role is to provide an environment that is playful, encourages social and developmental growth, and offers an increased sense of comfort within the health care experience. There are programs within CFL that serve unique populations like infant/toddlers and teens or assist CFL staff in planned playroom activities or work with children restricted to their beds. Other volunteers assist with television production, preadmission activities, leading tours, and pet therapy. Variety of shift available including evening and weekend.

Child Family Life  - Spanish Speaking TV Host (University Campus)

Assist Child Family Life staff with closed-circuit TV show for pediatric patients.  Use your Spanish skills while participating in TV production.

Children's and Adolescent Mental Health (Riverside Campus)

Work with small groups in unit activities.  Assist staff by listening, reading books, and interacting with patients.  Volunteers must be at least 21 years old.  Variety of shifts available including evenings and weekends.

Clerical (Riverside and University Campuses)

Assist departments with filling, assembling patient education information, copying, etc.

Electro-Convulsive Therapy (Riverside Campus)

Provide support to patients and staff on Electro Convulsive Therapy Unit.  Must be 21 or older.

Emergency Department (University and Riverside Campuses)

Assist patients, waiting families, and staff.  Must be 21 or older.

Emergency Department Greeter (Riverside Campus)

Help create a warm and welcoming environment for visitors to the Emergency Department.

Family Resource Center (University Campus)

Assist families in finding reliable and useful information about their child's medical condition.

Gift Shop Clerk (Riverside and University Campuses)

Wait on customers, operate cash register, stock and straighten shelves. Days, evenings and weekends.

Hand Massage (University and Riverside Campuses)

Give the gift of hand massage to patients.  Day, evening and weekend shifts available.

Immunization Action Plan (Riverside Campus)

Work with Hennepin County to sign up new moms for infant immunization reminder program. 

Information Desk (Riverside Campus)

Create a welcoming environment for patients and visitors and help them with wayfinding.  Must be empathetic, a good problem solver, and passionate about helping others.  A second language is helpful.

IV Infusion Clinic (Riverside Campus)

Assist staff of Infusion Center with a variety of tasks including working with patients, deliveries, stocking, room prep and light clerical duties.

Junior Volunteers (University and Riverside Campuses)

Program for 15-18 year olds.  High School students can learn about health careers and the hospital environment while volunteering.  12 hour per week commitment.  Summers only.

Mother and Father Goose (Riverside Campus)

Rock premature babies in the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit.  Shifts available 24 hours a day.

Newsletter Volunteer (Riverside and University Campus)

Design a quarterly newsletter for Volunteer Services.  Interview, write and edit articles.  Take photos.  Collaborate with staff to create content.  Circulation of 800.

Nursing Unit Volunteer (Riverside Campus)

Assist patients and nursing staff on busy nursing unit.

Oncology Clinic (University Campus)

Interact with patients and visitors in cancer clinic.

Physical Therapy (University Campus)

Assist physical therapists as they work with patients.  Weekdays.

Radiation Therapy (University Campus)

Greet and assist patients, restock supplies and assist with clerical tasks. Day shift.

Radiology (University Campus)

Assist staff and patients in department.

Rehab Services (University Campus)

Assist with restocking of supplies, cleaning of equipment, and clerical tasks. Four hours per week, weekdays.

Retail Pharmacy Messenger (Riverside Campus)

Help deliver prescriptions throughout the hospital.

Special Events Assistant (University Campus)

Assist staff at special events designed to provide diversion and entertainment for patients and families.

Spiritual Health (University Campus)

Through the coordinated efforts of the Chaplains department, volunteers from varied religious denominations may visit patients of their faith during hospitalization.

Surgery Family Lounge (Riverside and University Campuses)

Answer phones, direct visitors, assist patient's families during their wait, provide coffee/tea. Must be able to empathize with persons under stress. Shifts available 9 AM - 7:30 PM.

Treat Trolley (University Campus)

Serve beverages and snack items to parents of pediatric patients, siblings and some patients every Tuesday and Thursday evening  Stocking cart, serving and clean-up will take 2 hours each evening.. 

Volunteer Guide (University Campus)

Help patients and visitors find their way around the hospital's University Campus.

Patient Visitor Program (University Campus)

Watchful Companions support families during stressful periods of hospitalization. They provide companionship for adults and pediatric patients and a diversion from any treatments and procedures that a patient may be experiencing.  Day, weekend and evening shifts available.

Ebenezer Senior Housing

Enjoy working with seniors in assisted living facilities or unassisted apartments. Contact Sally Newbury, Ebenezer Volunteer Director, at snewbur1@fairview.org or 612-872-8515.

Fairview Children's Clinic

Read to children in the lobby of a busy pediatric clinic on University Avenue near the University of Minnesota.  Volunteers needed daily in the afternoon from 2:30-5 pm, Monday through Friday, and Saturday from 11 am until 2 pm.  Other times may be available.  Contact Karin Kishel, Patient Care Supervisor, 612-672-1265.

Fairview Home Care and Hospice

Assist hospice patients and their families in their homes.  Mandatory training provided. Click here for more information or call our volunteer coordinator, at 612-728-2446.

Fairview LIFELINE

Installers - Install Lifeline units in subscribers' homes.  Vehicle required.   Customer Service Callers - Contact subscribers by phone to check Lifeline units.  Call Deb Jensen at 952-885-6185.

Fairview Multiple Sclerosis Achievement Center

Assist patients with M. S. in a day treatment program.  Help with ceramics and other creative arts activities.  Excellent opportunity for OT and PT students.  Call 612-672-2815 for more information.

Fairview Domestic Abuse Services

Crisis Advocate - Provide crisis advocacy for hospital and phone clients who have experienced abuse and violence in the past or currently.  Training provided.  A variety of on-call shifts are available.  Call Joanne Seaberg  or Becky Molstad at 612-672-2700

National Institute for Media and the Family

Help with office support and special projects for a national resource center for research, information, and education about the impact of the media on children and families.  612-672-5437.

Wellness Connection

Medical Office Volunteer - Data entry of client information, assist with documentation of client data and program outcomes.  Requires strong organizational skills and experience with maintaining client charts.  Training and supervision are provided.  Call Lynnea Forness, Operations Director, The Wellness Connection at 612-879-8730,  Worksite:  Lutheran Social Services, 2414 Park Ave South, Suite 90, Minneapolis.
