Pharmacy Residency Program Frequently Asked Questions
Program & Application Information

PROGRAM INFORMATION

  • What rotations are required?

Required rotations include one pediatrics rotation, two management rotations, and two 8-week core rotations. The remainder of the year can be spent in a variety of elective rotations.

  • What are core rotations?

Core rotations allow the resident to spend 8 consecutive weeks in one patient care area. These rotations provide an opportunity for the residency to focus on a particular patient care area and build greater skills toward an independent practice. The core rotations are selected by the resident from elective options, as scheduling permits. At least one core rotation must be in a non-administrative patient care area.

  • How much interaction do residents have with their preceptor?

The amount of time residents spend with their preceptor varies based on the rotation and the experience of the resident. Our goal is to create effective, efficient, and independent pharmacy practitioners. As such, some rotations will be more independent, project focused, with less direct time with preceptors.

  • How much interaction do residents have with the program director?

Residents meet with the director on a quarterly basis for evaluations. The program director also attends weekly staff meetings, as well as weekly seminars with the residents and serves as the clinical management rotation preceptor.

  • What types of presentations are required?

On each rotation, residents are expected to prepare a lecture or in-service. Also, residents rotate presenting at weekly staff meetings. Residents prepare poster presentations for the University HealthSystem Consortium meeting in conjunction with ASHP Midyear and present at the Midwest Pharmacy Resident’s Conference in the spring. Residents may also be expected to present at various other meetings throughout the year including Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee or Formulary and Drug Use Committee.

  • What teaching opportunities are available to the residents?

Residents serve as teaching assistants with the college of pharmacy for one semester. There are also opportunities for the residents to teach and precept students on acute care rotations.

  • What types of projects do residents complete?

Residents have the opportunity to select their project at the beginning of the residency. The Pharmacy Department develops a list of projects that meet the departmental strategic interests, clinical and safety goals. Whenever possible, projects are selected to best match the resident with their professional interests.

  • When do residents work on their projects?

Instead of designating one rotation for working on projects, residents are able to take project days throughout the year.

  • What meetings are the residents able to attend?

Residents attend ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and University HealthSystem Consortium Meeting in December. Residents are encouraged to attend local and state organization meetings. Residents attend and present their major residency project at the Midwest Pharmacy Residents Conference in the spring.

  • What is the salary residents receive?

Salary is competitive with current rate of about $42,000/ year.

  • What types of employee benefits are available to residents?

Residents are eligible for benefits that are available to full-time employees, which include health, dental, and life insurance.

  • How much vacation time is available to the residents?

Residents accrue paid time off (PTO) throughout the year with a total of 24 days to cover holidays, sick and vacation days.

  • Do residents work holidays?

Residents are required to work 3 major holidays during the year.

  • What does staffing “on-line” mean?

Residents work on decentral pharmacy teams for several patient care units. Residents are responsible for order entry and dispensing functions in addition to clinical services.

  • Are career opportunities available to residents with the hospital post-residency?

As a large, academic institution, there typically are positions available at either the Medical Center or other pharmacies within Fairview. The residency program preceptors are dedicated to assisting residents in finding positions that match their career goals.

  • What have previous residents done post-residency?

Previous residents have gone on to complete fellowships, specialty residencies, and work as clinical pharmacists in hospital, clinic, home infusion, retail and managed care settings. A number of former residents are now in leadership positions, including Director of Pharmacy.
