Pharmacy Practice Management Residency Program Outline

The residency is a 2-year residency program that fulfills the requirements of a PGY-1 residency and a PGY-2 residency. The successful resident is awarded a certificate for PGY-1, for PGY-2, and a Master's Degree in Social and Administrative Pharmacy from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy.

Year One

The first year is divided into 12 one-month rotation experiences. The first month is a training month in drug distribution services. Residents provide drug distribution services "on-line" for six shifts per six-week period, four of which are weekend shifts.

 Required rotations for the first year include the following:

  • Two 2-month "core" rotations
  • One pediatric rotation
  • Two management rotations (clinical and operations management)

This schedule leaves a number of months open for electives, which may include the following rotations:

    • Nutrition Support/TPN
    • Surgery Intensive Care
    • Solid Organ Transplantation
    • Cardiology/Cardiovascular Surgery
    • Infectious Disease
    • Investigational Drug Services
    • Bone Marrow Transplant
    • Medicine Intensive Care
    • Oncology
    • Behavioral/Psychiatry
    • Internal Medicine
    • Home Infusion
  • Pediatric Rotations
    • General Pediatrics
    • Hematology/Oncology
    • Bone Marrow Transplant
    • Neonatal Intensive Care
    • Pediatric Intensive Care
    • Behavioral/Psychiatry

Year Two

Year two will focus on the development of practice management skills and will include experiences in the following areas:

  • Budgeting
  • Human Resources
  • Strategic Planning
  • Implementation of a new service or technology
  • Performance Improvement Techniques including PDCA, Six Sigma, and LEAN
  • Marketing
  • Regulatory Requirements
  • JCAHO

Rotation experiences include hospital pharmacy, retail pharmacy, home infusion, pharmacy benefits management, specialty pharmacy, central compounding, mail order, and pharmaceutical care practice.

Coursework

Didactic coursework will take place through the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. Approximately 7 credits per semester are required to reach a program requirement of 30 total credits. Required courses include Social Measurement, Healthcare Financial Management, Pharmaceutical Economics, Organizational Behavior, Hospital Pharmacy Administration, and Healthcare Human Resources. Other elective courses are available.

Longitudinal expectations

Longitudinal expectations of the residency program include the following:

  • Completion of a pharmacy residency project for presentation at the Midwest Residency Conference
  • Preparation of poster presentation for University HealthSystem Consortium Meeting
  • Attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical and University HealthSystem Consortium Meetings
  • Preparation of Formulary Reviews
  • Participation and attendance at Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and Formulary and Drug Use Committee
  • Completion of a DUE project
  • Off-site visit to at least one other area institution
  • Assist in precepting College of Pharmacy students
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and weekly residency conferences

Evaluations

  • The Resident is evaluated monthly by the rotation preceptor, using the Residency Learning Systems (RLS) Objectives.
  • The Program Director also evaluates the Resident's performance on a monthly basis.
